Coconut Oil As A Personal Lubricant — What You Need To Know

Coconut Oil As A Personal Lubricant — What You Need To Know

Coconut oil has been used on skin and hair for centuries. The logic is simple — if it's safe to eat, it's safe to apply to your body. No synthetic ingredients, no preservatives, nothing you wouldn't recognise.

We started getting enquiries about coconut oil as a personal lubricant from journalists, customers, and a few well-known faces who shall remain nameless. So we did what we always do — went back to our customers and asked them directly. What follows is what they told us, plus the practical information you need if you're considering it.

Why people use coconut oil as a lubricant

  • Natural, preservative-free and cost-effective compared to most commercial lubricants
  • More lubricating than water-based alternatives — it doesn't dry out
  • Particularly useful during menopause when natural lubrication decreases
  • Contains caprylic acid, which has natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties
  • Some commercial natural lubricants already contain coconut oil as a key ingredient
  • Causes fewer sheet stains than heavier oils like olive oil

The cons — read these before using it

  • Not compatible with latex condoms. Coconut oil degrades latex which can cause breakage. If you use condoms, use polyurethane ones instead.
  • Test on a small patch of skin first if you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions
  • It can still leave marks on sheets — treat any stains immediately with baking soda before washing

Which coconut oil to use

Not all coconut oil is the same. For use as a personal lubricant, the standard should be high:

  • Virgin and cold pressed — not refined, bleached or deodorised
  • Organic certified — no pesticide residues
  • No added fragrances or ingredients
  • Uncontaminated — never double dip into the jar. Introducing moisture can allow mould to develop. Use a clean spoon or a single-use format.
  • Smells naturally sweet and is white when solid — these are signs of quality

Refined coconut oil is processed using chemicals including hexane. Manufacturers are not legally required to declare processing agents, so traces may remain. For something used on your body, virgin and unrefined is the only standard worth accepting.

The most practical format

Our 10ml Organic Coconut Oil Sachets are single-use, travel-sized, and nitrogen-flushed to maintain sterility and freshness. They were featured by Female First as a recommended vegan lubricant — one of the few coconut oil products to be specifically recognised for this use.
